Description[]
1394 - 1481
A Buddhist monk of the mid-Muromachi period. It is said he reached enlightenment upon hearing the cry of a crow. He had many eccentric behaviors, such as burning religious documents, taking blind women and beautiful young men as lovers, and walking around during the New Year with a skull-topped staff. He also had a strong relationship with the imperial household and supported Emperor Go-Hanazono in taking the throne. Emperoг Go-Tsuchimikado gave the imperial command that made him head priest of the Rinzai sect's Daitoku-ji Temple. He was loved by the common people for his quick wit.
