Description[]
1823 - 1899
A shogunate retainer and politician at the end of the Edo period and the early Meiji period. During the Boshin War, when the forces of the new imperial government were nearing Edo, he advocated peaceful surrender in order to prevent a long, damaging civil war. After he sent Kondō Isami's resistance forces away from Edo so they would be destroyed in battle, used the British minister Parks to pressure the Imperial government, and got the people of Edo to agree, his strategy was complete. He then negotiated a bloodless surrender of Edo with the new government's officer Saigō Takamori
