A politician and famous poet of the early Heian period. Counted as one of the Thirty-six Poetry Immortals. At Emperor Daigo's command, he compiled Japan's first imperially-sponsored poetry anthology, the "Kokin Wakashū" and wrote one of the prefaces. He is also the author of Japan's oldest remaining literary diary, the "Tosa Nikki." Written in kana, it influenced the style in which later women would write. One of his poems is also included in the "Hyakunin Isshu" poetry anthology.
