Description[]
1836 - 1893
A politician of the end of the Edo period, he was the ruler of the Aizu domain. During the disturbance surrounding the end of the shogunate, he fought on to honor Hoshina Masayuki's dying wish. He was ready to accept the demise of the Aizu domain and took a position protecting Kyōto. He also participated in the August 18th incident. He received a handwritten letter from the Emperor himself, but disagreed on the doctrine expelling the foreigners. As a result, he was disliked by the new government army and was denied support during the Boshin War. At the Battle of Aizu, the people of Aizu were declared to be rebels, but afterwards, he believed in the honor of the Aizu cause and refused to part with the Emperor's letter for the rest of his life.
