"The only realm left to the humans in this part of the world. The Holy Mount is at the center of the Midlands, and is surrounded by Slayer villages."
Key Terms description.

The Midlands (中つ国, Nakatsu Kuni) are a land that acts as the setting of all Toukiden games. Based on the real life Japan, they are a mix of the Oni-infested Otherworld and the few remaining Slayer villages that resist it.

Villages and Clean Areas[]

  • Holy Mount - The main base of the Slayers at the center of the Midlands, protected by the Hundred Demon Corps. It is described as a large, bustling city where the High Priestess, leader of the Sacred Shrine Maidens, lives.
  • Utakata Village - A village in the east, its main symbol is a massive Guardian Tree that is not entirely seen in-game. Unlike in other villages, supposedly, the Sacred Shrine Maiden is allowed to go outside for long periods of time.
  • (Utakata) Village Surrounds - A region in the vicinity of Utakata Village. Great battles happened there during the Awakening, as seen by the various ruins around it. To the east, there is a path connected to the Otherworld, with two Ages combined in some areas.
  • Barrier Stone Cave - An icy cave in the Otherworld with clean air, formerly used as shelter for Slayers. It is most likely located between the Ages of Honor and Chaos.
  • Shiranui Village - A village to the north of Utakata, supposedly wealthy and with a strong sense of independence. Due to the sacrifices made by Kuyō during the Awakening, it has cut relations with the Holy Mount. Most of its Slayers wear a special uniform.
  • Beyond the Known - A lush grassy field with holy trees, and the place where the Slayers were founded a thousand years ago. It was drastically changed when a Metagnost appeared in the current age, and restored after its death. Its location is unknown, but it is probably close to Utakata Village.
  • Mahoroba Village - A village in the west surrounded by mountains, with a history of opposition between insiders and outsiders. Its main symbol is the Divine Seat, a massive rock said to seal the power to travel through time.
  • Mahoroba Hills - A mountainous region in the vicinity of Mahoroba Village, with four entrances to the Otherworld. The Ruins of the Machina Plains can be seen in the distance.
  • Shinonome Village - A village in the north. Since the Otherworld around it is seemingly the same as Utakata, the two villages are probably close to each other.
  • Akatsuki, Hōzuki and Ikaruga Villages - All destroyed.
  • Izayoi and Utsusemi Villages - Mentioned in Toukiden: The Age of Demons. Their location is unknown, but they are presumably still inhabited.

Otherworld[]

Parts of the Midlands contaminated and corrupted by the Oni during the Awakening. Only two regions of it have been shown so far, each one divided in six "Ages" reminiscent of certain periods of Japanese history. A poisonous gas called miasma infests every region of it, and only the Slayers have the physical and spiritual strength to survive it for more than a few minutes.

Trivia[]

  • Considering the Midlands' description in the Key Terms and the fact that Benizuki calls them "this region in which people still live", it is most likely that most of the other countries of the world fell during the Awakening due to the lack of Slayers living in them.
  • All places in the Midlands seem to share a single characteristic: a large sphere of light in the sky, inside a vortex of clouds. It was described by an astrologer from Mahoroba as "Something that looks like the sun, but isn't. Something pretending to be the moon." It is most likely linked to the Awakening in some way.
