In the mid-Heian period he served as provincial governor of several domains under Fujiwara no Michinaga, The wealth he amassed ensured a prosperous future for the Seiwa Genji line of the Minamoto clan. Minamoto no Yoritomo and Minamoto no Yoshitsune are descended from his younger brother, Yorinobu. Legend says he was a strong warrior who led his "Four Guardian Kings", Watanabe no Tsuna, Usui Sadamitsu, Urabe no Suetake, and Sakata no Kintoki, on a mission to kill the Oni Shuten Dōji and his son Kidōmaru on Mount Ōe. When the monster Tsuchigumo led a horde of apparitions to assassinate Yorimitsu, he cut them down with the Minamoto family sword, Hizamaru.
