Main Combat

This page covers information on how to fight Oni in the main Toukiden games.

Small Oni[]

Small Oni are just like common enemies in most RPGs, and can usually be defeated in a few attacks. Their health bars can be seen using the Eye of Truth. They have no elemental resistances or weaknesses, but some of their attacks may deal elemental damage.

Medium Oni[]

As their name suggests, medium Oni are stronger than small Oni, which they are able to summon, but weaker than large ones. Unlike small Oni, they have elemental resistances and weaknesses, and most of them are weak to the Sky element for some reason. They also have two health bars - one for their body surface, and another for their actual health or essence. They can be seen using the Eye of Truth, along with minor body parts that can be destroyed and an icon which color indicates their strength compared to the player.

Essence revealed (マガツヒ, magatsuhi)[]

The Oni will enter this state once its surface health bar has been depleted. The easiest way to do so is to destroy one of its body parts. During this state, attacking it will deplete its essence bar.

Rampage (タマハミ, tamahami)[]

The Oni will enter this state once it has low health. Its essence will still be exposed, but its attacks will change in turn.

Large Oni[]

These are the biggest and strongest type of Oni. Like medium Oni, they have elemental weaknesses and resistances and their health bars and breakable body parts can be seen with the Eye of Truth. However, they have both minor parts such as horns, and major parts such as arms or legs - the latter can be severed and purified, making the Oni create a phantom copy which essence is always exposed.

Essence revealed[]

"I see. The outer shell is a mere illusion. The real Oni lies within."
Horō, when the protagonist breaks one of a Mynx's parts in Northern Exposure.

Like medium Oni, large Oni will enter this state once their surface health bar has been depleted, leaving their essence exposed. Some of their attacks may change slightly. If a large Oni regains its defense and there are still body parts laying in the ground, it will try to regenerate them.

Rampage[]

"Gah. Does this thing have no limits? But we can't back down from this battle!"
Gwen, when the final boss of Toukiden 2 enters a rampage.

The conditions and effects of the rampage may vary depending on the Oni. Most of them enter this state when they have half or less health, and their attacks change drastically at the cost of their defense. Some Oni may even regenerate all of their major parts, which also means they will be in this state for the rest of the battle.

Complete destruction (完全破壊, kanzen hakai)[]

Exclusive to Toukiden 2, the Oni will enter this state if one or more of its major body parts has been completely destroyed with Oni Burial. Its attacks will change even further, but its movements may become sloppier.
