Reason: Everything involving the foundation of the Slayers is explained in Toukiden: Kiwami. This page also mentions the Five Legendary Heroes.

"May the light of the heroes illuminate your path."
The Slayers' most known catchphrase.

The Slayers (モノノフ, mononofu; roughly translated as "warrior[s]") are an organization present in every Toukiden game. Founded a thousand years prior to the games' events, they are powerful warriors trained to defeat the Oni, and are also most of the important characters. Their main headquarters is a city called the Holy Mount, but they are also present in presumably every remaining village in the Midlands.

History[]

One thousand years before the events of the games (presumably in the Heian period), the Slayers were founded by three people: Horō, a markswoman from a distant world, Chitose, a girl that could talk with animals, and Obito, a boy with golden eyes that could talk with the souls of the dead. Chitose was the one who came up with the name of the organization, as well as its nickname of "demons who slay demons." Together, the tree young heroes and other warriors recruited to their cause started fighting the Oni. Since common people feared the Slayers' supernatural abilities and called them Oni as well, they went on to create villages hidden in the mountains to isolate themselves.

One day, a powerful Oni called Metagnost appeared, converting everything it touched into more Oni. As the Slayers fought it, Chitose fell into an Oni Gate and emerged one thousand years later, with half of her body transformed into that of an Oni, while Obito was killed by the Metagnost. As his soul left his body, he transferred all of his remaining power into it and forced it into a device in Horō's body that could capture souls, becoming her Mitama in the process. The Metagnost then escaped through an Oni Gate into the currents of time, with Horō giving chase and battling it across the ages.

One thousand years later, the Slayers continued to protect the world in secret, until an unimaginable disaster ocurred: the Awakening. An Oni Gate opened in the north of the Midlands, releasing massive hordes of Oni into the world. The Oni effortlessly wiped out any non-Slayer settlements in their way, and used the memories of the Mitama they had consumed to distort time and space around them. Facing the end of the world, the Slayers came out of hiding and took in the survivors on their hidden villages, while defending them from the Oni during a week of fierce battles. Since the Meiji government had collapsed, the Slayers also became the only govermental body in the Midlands, operating from the Holy Mount. During the war, Yamato of Utakata Village, Sōma of the Hundred Demon Corps and Benizuki from Mahoroba Village, along with two unknown Slayers, became known as the Five Legendary Heroes due to their incredible strength in battle.

Abilities[]

  • Eye of Truth (鬼ノ目, oni no me): A special vision that can detect hidden materials, the health and breakable body parts of Oni, etc. The Demon Hand also allows it to see the tracks of large Oni.
  • Ritual of Purification (鬼祓い, onibarai): A ritual used to purify the corpses and body parts of Oni. Also known as the Stance of Communion. Through this, Slayers can also activate their Mitama's Skills.
  • Destroyer (鬼千切, onichigiri): A powerful attack that can kill a small Oni or destroy a medium or large one's body part instantly.
    • United Destroyer (鬼千切極, onichigiri kiwami): An amplified version of the Destroyer introduced in Toukiden: Kiwami. If your allies are close to you, Soul Bonds will appear between you and them. The more allies you have close to you, the more body parts you can destroy at once with this attack.
  • Stormrunner (鬼疾風, onihayate): Introduced in Toukiden 2, allows the Slayers to run faster than usual.

Trivia[]

  • According to the Defense of Yokohama cutscene, Toukiden 2 takes place in Oni Year 1010 (and by extension, Toukiden: The Age of Demons and Toukiden: Kiwami take place in Oni Year 1008). This means the Slayers most likely created an "Oni calendar" counting from the date of their foundation.
  • According to the Key Terms, Slayers are chosen from birth. This is false, as many outsiders were able to become Slayers as well, such as Gwen, who is not even from Japan.
