Prologue[]
Since ancient times, a group known as the Slayers secretly fought powerful beings known as Oni, with the ability to regenerate lost limbs and grow stronger the more souls they consume. However, one day a massive horde of Oni invaded the human world, killing most of humanity and distorting time and space, turning many parts of the land into the Otherworld. Ever since this event, which became known as "the Awakening", the Slayers stepped out of the shadows and became the only governmental body in the Midlands, protecting what remains of mankind.
Eight years have passed since this incident, and a Slayer named Ōka stands atop a cliff, looking at the distorted landscape before her when her friend Ibuki appears. She laments the fate of the region, that once had been a lush, green forest. They notice a horde of Oni below them, led by a large lion-like one, and quickly defeat them. Ōka leaves the rest of the nearby Oni to Ibuki and returns to their home of Utakata Village, where a new Slayer recruit should arrive soon.
Meanwhile, said recruit has a strange dream, in which six mysterious figures speak to them. They hope the recruit to be the one who will bear their hopes, and they use the dream to test their worth as a future Slayer. The recruit finds themselves in an arena in the middle of a dense forest, where a giant devil-like Oni attacks them. With the souls' help, they learn how to use an ability called the Eye of Truth, which enables them to see which of the Oni's body parts are most vulnerable, and to use mysterious Skills that increase the power of their weapon. Shortly after the Oni's spiritual essence is exposed, it disappears along with the arena, with the six souls being satisfied with the result of the battle, awaiting to meet the recruit again in the future.
The recruit later arrives at the Slayers' headquarters of Utakata Village, where they are greeted by Ōka and the village chief, Yamato. Ōka leads them to their new house, when they tell her they came from a land in the east that was devastated during the Awakening. After they take a look inside the house, Ōka prepares to continue the tour of the village, but the two suddenly hear an alarm bell in the distance, signalizing an Oni attack. When they arrive at headquarters, Yamato informs them the target is a group of low-level Oni, and decides to use this mission to test if the new recruit is ready to become a true Slayer.
After Ōka explains the situation and what the Oni have done to the human world, the recruit talks with Yū, the headquarters' receptionist, and the two Slayers head out to a region known as the Age of Grace, where they defeat the Oni group. However, at the end of the battle, a particular small Oni's corpse releases a glowing human soul who speaks to the new recuit and decides to join them in the fight against the Oni. As the Oni's corpse fades away, Ōka tells the recruit that soul was a Mitama, one of the souls of heroes that the Oni have eaten, and something not all Slayers can have. Yamato congratulates them for their victory when they return, particularly the new recruit, who then goes off to meet Tatara the blacksmith, Shikimi the Maiden of Mitama, and Shūsui the researcher, and then goes to rest at home.
Meanwhile, Ōka and Yamato are discussing the lack of reinforcements for the village from the Holy Mount, the largest Slayer base in the center of the Midlands. Ōka shouts, thinking the Holy Mount will let them all die like the people of Hōzuki Village, only for her to quickly apologize. Yamato tells her the Holy Mount is reserving their forces to protect them in case of direct attack, and that, from their point of view, what happened during the Awakening mustn't happen again.
While the recruit is sleeping, Minamoto no Yorimitsu, the Mitama they released from the Oni, speaks to them in their dreams, lamenting his own fate but vowing to help them defeat the Oni. He also senses the presence of many other Mitama nearby, saying they may all be rescued by them one day, and will be by their side to the very end.
Chapter 1: Guardians of the Eye of Truth[]
The next morning, the protagonist returns to the headquarters where Yamato explains the state of the war against the Oni and tells them they must focus on fighting smaller Oni to strengthen themselves and their Mitama. He also mentions he will train them if necessary. The protagonist then takes on more missions in the Age of Grace, and talks to Ōka when they return. She says she will have to leave the village for a while on a mission of her own, and that they'll work with other two Slayers in the next mission. As they arrive in the Age of Grace once again, they meet their new teammates: Ibuki and Hatsuho, the latter claiming she is the oldest of the group, and the three quickly defeat the Oni and return to Utakata.
As they return, Ōka asks them how did the mission go, with Ibuki saying that it went well thanks to the protagonist. Relieved, Ōka tells the protagonist they need to have faith in their allies to defeat the Oni, and that the experienced Slayers will show them the ropes. Right outside of the headquarters, Hatsuho begs Yamato to let her fight a large Oni, to which he bluntly refuses, saying she is not ready yet. As she walks away, annoyed, Yamato notices the protagonist had heard the conversation, and tells them large Oni do exist, but that the protagonist is not ready to face them either.
Afterwards, they talk with Hatsuho, who is annoyed at the thought of being considered not strong enough on her own, and suggests that the two go on a mission together as training. The protagonist accepts the request and the two head out to the Age of Grace once more, fighting a group of spider-like Oni. After defeating all the Oni, Hatsuho hears a strange noise, but dismisses it and the two return to Utakata. Back in the headquarters, the protagonist asks Hatsuho why does she want to prove her worth as a Slayer so much. She tells them she feels like she is an older sister to everyone living in Utakata, thus needing to protect them. As she tries to explain what she means by that, the alarm bell suddenly rings.
The protagonist, Ōka, Ibuki and Hatsuho gather in the headquarters, where Yamato tells them a large Oni is heading to the village. As Hatsuho realizes it heard them in their previous battle, Yamato tries to assign her and the protagonist to defensive positions. Hatsuho asks him to let them fight the Oni, saying they can do it together. Yamato reluctantly agrees, telling Ōka to lead a defensive unit and sending Ibuki along with the two rookies. The three Slayers head out to the Age of Grace again, and their enemy, a Manhunter, emerges from the ground. As the battle ensues, the protagonist learns how to properly fight the Oni - severing and purifying its many limbs to expose its essence.
After a fierce battle, the Oni is finally killed, and from its corpse emerges another Mitama, Abe no Seimei. The three Slayers return to the village, with Yamato congratulating them on their victory and recognizing the protagonist and Hatsuho as fully-fledged Slayers. Hatsuho thanks the protagonist for their help on the battle, and they go to rest at home. In their dreams, Abe no Seimei appears, explaining that the Manhunter consumed both his soul and part of the thread of history, and as more Mitama are eaten by the Oni, history itself is slowly changed. Curious to see how all of this will play out, Seimei offers the protagonist his help.
Chapter 2: The Mighty Gather[]
The following morning, Hatsuho visits the protagonist and tells them more about the Awakening, although they don't seem to be interested. After she leaves, they go outside and find a white-haired girl playing with a two-tailed fox, the latter running up to the protagonist when she sees them. Seeing that the fox has taken a liking to the protagonist, the girl asks them if they could take care of the fox. The protagonist presumably agrees, and takes their new pet, a Tenko, home.
Back in the headquarters, Yamato tells the protagonist there are other Slayers in the village they haven't met yet, and two of them have already left on a mission. The protagonist then heads out to a new region, the Age of Honor, and meets Nagi and Fugaku, their new teammates. The three then fight a horde of small Oni that has gathered in nearby, but out of nowhere a large Oni called Windshredder appears and attacks them. However, it is defeated and the Mitama of Taira no Kiyomori emerges from it.
As they return to the village, Yamato tells them other units had been attacked by Windshredders before, as this Oni prefers to attack when its prey are tired and vulnerable. Fugaku tells the protagonist they did well for a rookie, and Nagi says she will explain anything they don't understand. As the three Slayers leave, Shūsui notices the recent increase in Oni activity and thinks it will soon be time to implement a certain plan he is part of. In the protagonist's home, Taira no Kiyomori speaks to them, saying that even though nothing lasts forever, the protagonist mustn't fall just yet, and offers them his help.
Back in headquarters, Hatsuho notices the protagonist has a new Mitama - many of them, in fact - and deems it as unfair. Yamato tells them that ability is special even among Slayers, and sends them on their next mission. After returning to Utakata, Fugaku notices they are an outsider and Nagi offers to explain how the world of the Slayers works. Finding the explanation most boring, Fugaku promptly leaves and the protagonist listens to the explanation some more time, seemingly against their will.
After one more mission, the protagonist, Fugaku and Nagi meet with the other Slayers. As Fugaku responds aggressively to Ibuki, the two quickly turn their attention to Hatsuho and shout at her for, once again, treating others like children while being the youngest of the group. After the other Slayers leave, the protagonist sees Kikka, the girl who gave them their Tenko earlier that day. Kikka says she also works with the Slayers, although she has a different role, and that Tenko seem to understand what humans say. The protagonist then speaks to Fugaku, who asks them if they have seen a large, winged Oni in the sky. They say they haven't seen it, and Fugaku tells them to warn him if they do, as if he has a grudge against it. Yū then tells the protagonist Yamato is giving a strategy briefing in the headquarters.
With the Slayers gathered in the headquarters, Yamato announces his new strategy: Ōka will lead a decoy unit to draw out large Oni, and the others will join in as soon as the Oni attack. Fugaku also asks him if any flying Oni have been sighted, to which he replies that he wasn't told about any. After most of the Slayers leave, Yamato asks Ōka and the protagonist to bring back a body part of a large Oni, so Kikka can use her "clairvoyance" ability on it. Ōka tells the protagonist she will take care of that task, and that they should focus on defeating the Oni. Thanks to Yamato's strategy, both a Manhunter and a Windshredder were lured and slain.
After returning from the decoy missions, the protagonist meets Kikka again in the headquarters, who tells them they will be safe inside her energy barrier. Noticing their confusion, Kikka explains that she can create a barrier by channeling her power through the giant Barrier Stones around the village, and keep the Oni from reaching it. Quickly changing to a more worried tone, she says her powers are only defensive and she can't do anything if the Oni do enter the village. She also says many villages have been overrun by Oni once their barrier has been breached, and that Fugaku wishes to avenge his people as the only survivor of Hōzuki Village. Finally, Kikka wishes the protagonist the best of luck as a Slayer.
The protagonist then talks with Yamato about Fugaku's situation, and then with Fugaku himself. Fugaku explains that the winged Oni he's after killed everyone in Hōzuki but him, and that he wants to release the souls of his fallen friends from it. The protagonist goes back to headquarters, only to find out the other Slayers gathered and alarmed. Yamato explains that Ōka has not returned when she should have, and the protagonist, Hatsuho and Fugaku offer themselves to go after her.
Stepping into the fiery lands of the Age of War, the three find Ōka being attacked by a Jollux. Ōka tells the others that the Oni turned their strategy against them and ambushed her, and that they should retreat to defend the village. Fugaku insists on fighting alongside her, seeing it as the only reason for his survival, and another battle begins between the Slayers and the Oni. As the Oni finally dies, another Mitama, Takeda Shingen emerges from its body. The Slayers then return to Utakata, carrying a part of the Oni with them.
Back in headquarters, the team of Slayers is congratulated for their victory, but Ōka comments on the recent movements of the Oni. Yamato tells Yū to bring Kikka to the headquarters to inspect the retrieved body part. As Kikka arrives, she says a strange prayer that allows her to see the residual intent of the Oni. She senses that the Oni was being commanded by another, and a powerful presence to the east of the village.
