A samurai of the mid-Heian period. He was a descendant of Minamoto no Tōru, of the Saga Genji clan, who was the inspiration for the fictional character Hikaru Genji. He was known for his dashing looks and bravery. He served Minamoto no Yorimitsu as leader of the Four Guardian Kings. He traveled with Yorimitsu to subjugate the head Oni of Mount Ōe, Shuten Dōji. He was later attacked by Shuten Dōji's follower, Ibaraki Dōji, who had transformed into a beautiful woman. He cut off the Oni's arm, but Ibaraki Dōji later appeared disguised as a wet nurse to retrieve his arm.
