1283? - 1352?
An intellectual and essayist from the end of the Kamakura period into the Nanboku-chō period. Author of one of Japan's three greatest essays, Tsurezuregusa. Also skilled in waka poetry, he is counted as one of the Four Waka Kings and 18 of his poems are included in the "Chokusen Wakashū" anthology. After the establishment of the Muromachi shogunate, he became close with the shogunate official Kō no Moronao and wrote love letters to his wife for him. It is said she threw the letters out without reading them, though, and he was refused entry to Moronao's mansion as punishment.
